Downsizing...
I've helped a lot of people downsize from one lifestyle to another whether it be from a larger home to a smaller home, less land, no basement, no pool, etc. I've walked through homes filled with years of memories, helped people figure out what to keep, what to let go of, and talked through the challenges of leaving a place they've called home for so long.
Then it was my turn.
We sold our home and moved into a downtown loft in Maryville. Quite a change from a house with a couple of acres, a basement, garages, a workshop, and plenty of places to put things!
There's something wonderful about simplifying your life. Less house to maintain, no yard to worry about, and the opportunity to enjoy a completely different way of living.
But here's what I've discovered.

Downsizing your square footage doesn't necessarily mean you've downsized your life.
Even after sorting, donating, garage sales, etc. There are still all the things. Furniture you love. Family keepsakes. Things you might need someday. And, of course, the things you can't quite figure out why you've kept!
I've spent more time than I care to admit figuring out where everything is going to go. And yes, there's a storage unit (or more) involved. But, we have our deadline.
I've also learned that living differently takes some adjustment. You don't have to figure everything out at once, and sometimes the things you thought you couldn't live without aren't nearly as important as you imagined.
I really do enjoy our loft and this new chapter of life. It's different. Very different.
And while I've spent my career helping people navigate changes like this, going through it myself has given me an entirely new perspective.
Maybe that's one of the things I love most about real estate. No matter how long you've been doing it, life still has a way of teaching you something new.
And sometimes, you're the client!
Real estate follows life. Not the other way around.
